Latin America

Latin America generally refers to territories in the Americas where the Spanish, Portuguese or French languages prevail: Mexico, most of Central and South America, and in the Caribbean, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Puerto Rico. Latin America is becoming a popular place for aesthetic tourism. According to the Medical Tourism Association, American patients can save between 20 and 80% of the total cost of plastic surgery, if performed abroad, especially in Latin America. Tourism-review.com presents a list of the best places for quality plastic surgery, postoperative care as well as great vacation sites.

Latin America is a group of countries and dependencies in the Western Hemisphere where Romance languages such as Spanish, Portuguese, and French are predominantly spoken. It is broader than the terms Ibero-America or Hispanic America in categorizing the New World. The term comes from the fact that the predominant languages of the countries originated with the Latin language. Most of the countries of Latin America speak Spanish and are populated by a mixed-race population.

The term “Latin America” was first used in an 1856 conference with the title “Initiative of the Americas. Idea for a Federal Congress of the Republics” (Iniciativa de la América. Idea de un Congreso Federal de las Repúblicas),[6] by the Chilean politician Francisco Bilbao. The term was used also by Napoleon III’s French government in the 1860s as Amérique latine to consider French-speaking territories in the Americas (French Canada, French Louisiana, French Guiana, Haiti, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin, Saint Barthélemy), along with the larger group of countries where Spanish and Portuguese languages prevailed, including the Spanish-speaking portions of the United States (Southwestern United States and Florida).

Latin America consists of 20 countries and 14 dependent territories that cover an area that stretches from Mexico to Tierra del Fuego and includes much of the Caribbean. It has an area of approximately 19,197,000 km2 (7,412,000 sq mi), almost 13% of the Earth’s land surface area. As of March 2, 2020, population of Latin America and the Caribbean was estimated at more than 652 million, and in 2019, Latin America had a combined nominal GDP of US$5,188,250 million and a GDP PPP of 10,284,588 million USD.
